The McGill Martlets women’s basketball team capped off a historic 2016-2017 season with a national championship win–the first in Martlet basketball history. Despite a dismal 2-5 start to the season, the coaching staff never lost faith in the team.
“I’m going to miss being part of a big family,” McGill Martlet Hockey captain and centre Mélodie Daoust said, looking back on her five years with the team. Daoust hasn’t always seen McGill this way. She knew she wanted to pursue higher education at a top Canadian school, but coming from Valleyfield, QC, the transition to living in Montreal was tough.
Overall, McGill came out on top with 50 points, beating out Ottawa, who came in second with 48 points.
In the dead of winter, a crowd of McGill students in swimsuits and beachwear came to Love Competition Hall to see Martlets’ basketball (7-6) down the visiting UQAM Citadins (7-6) 55-50 on Feb. 9’s Beach Night.
Being a collegiate athlete at McGill is an enormous commitment. Practices during the week and travelling for games on the weekend takes up a large block of student athletes’ schedules. However, the Martlet Varsity Field Hockey team experiences this reality at an extreme.
