As of late Sunday night, Tobias Silverstein, U2 accounting and finance, announced that he will officially be running for the position of Students' Society Vice-President Finance and Operations. Rumours speculating his prospective candidacy had been spread following Peter Newhook's decision to decline the position just days after the SSMU elections, citing personal reasons.
"It has been something that I have been thinking about a lot recently," Silverstein said. "I finally decided to act and I'll be handing my application in tomorrow."
The deadline for applications is set for tomorrow at midnight. Yahel Carmon, the SSMU Council speaker, had also been named as a potential candidate in the rumours.
"At this point, the decision to run is more a personal one. The factors under consideration are not such that I'll make a whimsical decision. What I'll decide will be what is right for me," Carmon said. He added that he was still gathering signatures and planned on making a decision closer to the deadline. "Now, I'd say it's 50-50 in terms of whether I decide to run or not."
Current VP Finance and Operations Imad Barake spoke highly of Silverstein and was pleased that he was submitting an application.
"Tobias is a numbers person," he said. "He'll bring an even better management perspective to the position that I think it really needs. I think that he'll do a great job-he just needs to be educated in how SSMU functions and that's why we have this transition time."
In terms of the portfolio's biggest financial conundrum, Haven Books, Silverstein stated that he did not have sufficient information at this time to elucidate upon details.
"I'd love to make it less of a financial burden. And ultimately, make it turn a profit, but I really don't have the numbers to extrapolate upon my ideas," Silverstein said.
For Haven Books, Silverstein would be building upon the business model and the fiscal infrastructure that Barake has set up this past year.

Campaigning for the by-election begins on April 2 and will last three days, followed by advanced polling from April 4 to 7, and three days of regular polling from April 7 to 9. Results are to be released on April 9 at 5:00 p.m.
