In an interesting bid headed by Students' Society VP Finance Imad Barake, the Students' Society put together an application last weekend for funds to renovate Gert's. The bid asked for $14,000 to improve the stage, sound system, furniture and lighting in Gert's.

"Our proposal to AUIF was to renovate the performance area based on the results of the Gert's survey," Barake said. "Over 85 per cent of respondents [to the survey] wanted to renovate the bar."

The committee rejected the proposal on the grounds that SSMU was placing the onus on AUS to fully fund the renovations.

"Another thing that we take into consideration is if there is support from the group itself. I think the ratio of funding for the proposal was $500 from SSMU to $14,000 from the AUIF," Mirhady said.

Barake was disappointed with the result and felt that the some of the responsibility should be shared by the AUIF to fund the renovations.

"The AUS felt that they shouldn't be paying for a bar that all students use. Even though an appreciable number of students who use the bar are Arts students." n
