Secretariat assesses use of 'McGill' in student-run organizations
McGill clubs may soon be undergoing name changes due to administrative concerns over the use of the 'McGill' name, and in order to eliminate confusion between student-run and administration-run organizations. Students' Society Vice-President Clubs and Services Marcelle Kosman asserted that this could be part of a larger plan to clear up the university's image among media and potential investors.
McGill holds conference aimed at making genocides a relic of the past
The McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism held a historic conference this weekend at the Hotel OMNI, featuring some of the most influential people in human rights. Entitled the "Global Conference on the Prevention of Genocide," the event gave voice to a number of genocide survivors, academics, non-governmental organizations and politicians who hope to change the way humanity responds to genocide.

Potential leasers vie for approval from the administration
The currently vacant room 108 in the Shatner Building, formerly the site of computer store University Bytes, has remained empty since last April as no tenant suitable to both the Students' Society and the McGill administration has been found to fill the space.
Executives deny guilt, assert walkout a democratic right for students
When a walkout of nine management students and approximately 20 science students at last Tuesday's General Assembly resulted in a loss of quorum, fingers pointed to members of the Students' Society executive for "ruining the GA". In response to what some students saw as attempts at "sabotaging student democracy to protect the McGill Capital Campaign", students at large have begun a campaign for the impeachment of three executives of the Students' Society: President Jake Itzkowitz, Vice-President University Affairs Adrian Angus and Vice-President Finance and Operations Imad Barake.
Referendum dates pushed
The fall referendum has been pushed back two weeks due to the failure of the Sexual Assault Centre of McGill Students' Society to put forth the necessary question in order to renew their fee of 75 cents per semester. The motion to move the referendum passed at a special Council meeting last night 14-2, with some abstentions, moving the polling dates from Oct.
CKUT to host Independent Media Conference Next weekend, McGill campus and Montreal community radio station CKUT will be hosting the Independent Media Conference from Oct. 19 to Oct. 21. Kicking off the conference on Friday evening is keynote speaker Amy Goodman, a member of the independent news service Democracy Now!.
Periodical receives award and cash grant
Created ten years ago by McGill medical students with the mandate to promote the development and advancement of international student-based medical research, the McGill Journal of Medicine is now reaping the benefits of their hard work. It was recently lauded with a victory in the health category of the annual Forces Avenir awards, which was accompanied by a $4,000 grant.
TV show popularizes politics
CBC is offering young Canadians between the ages of 18 and 25 the opportunity to contest for the title of "Canada's Next Great Prime Minister" through a televised contest, hosted by Rick Mercer and judged by a panel of former prime ministers. The show, now in its second season and successor to a program established by Magna International Inc.
Electoral reform referendum a huge failure
Last Wednesday was a historic moment for Ontario as Premier Dalton McGuinty was re-elected in a sweeping victory for the Ontario Liberal party, marking the first time in 70 years that the provincial party has had a back-to-back majority win. The Liberal victory was won with 42.
Daily Publications Society to push for fee referendum
Students at Macdonald campus are going to the polls this Thursday, Oct. 18 to decide whether or not they would like to pay $3.75 per semester to join the Daily Publication Society and receive The McGill Daily and Le Délit on campus, which are currently available on a free trial basis.
